Reducing High Energy Bills in the Summer

Reducing High Energy Bills in the Summer

Published: 4/21/2026 3:17:04 PM

Summer temperatures may be unbearably high, but with these tips, your energy bills don't have to be.

When the summer heat rolls in, so do higher electricity costs. And, while a bump in your bill may be expected, a steeper jump may warrant a deeper dive.

Maintain your air conditioner

The most common reason for high summer bills is extreme weather. Heat waves can result in your air conditioner working overtime. Be sure to perform regular maintenance and have your system inspected by a qualified professional to make sure there aren't any issues that will keep it from operating at its most efficient and effective.

Add insulation and seal air leaks

Even with an efficiently running air conditioner, poor insulation and air sealing can make it harder to reach the desired temperature. Make sure your insulation is up to code in your walls, attic and crawl spaces. Seal any leaks around doors and windows. Air sealing your attic and basement — anywhere there is an opportunity for air infiltration, such as holes for wires, light fixtures or attic access — can result in year-round efficiency and comfort.

Turn things off when not in use

More people in your home can also lead to higher energy bills. Be sure to turn lights off when you're the last to leave a room. Use power management settings to ensure devices turn off or go into sleep mode when not in use.

Optimize pool pumps

If you have a pool, keep an eye on how long your pool pump needs to run. Oversized, undersized or older pool pumps may be inefficient and use more energy than needed. Upgrading to a more efficient or solar model could make a difference in your electric bills for summers to come.

Temperatures may be unbearably high, but with these tips, your energy bills don't have to be.
