AREA STUDENTS TO ATTEND YOUTH TOUR IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Two area high school juniors will be participating in the 2009 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. in June according to Larry Hellums, MCEC general manager.
Hellums announced that Jessica Pagan, daughter of Leslie and Solomon Leija and Tina Ashley of Dell and Lori Annalora daughter of Angela Annalora of Gosnell, are this years winners of the 2009 Youth Tour Essay Contest sponsored by Mississippi County Electric Cooperative. Jessica and Lori are juniors at Gosnell High School.
The winners were selected through an essay contest in which they were asked to write about the history of Rural Electrification.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for the two students,” Hellums said. “This trip is all expenses paid and will involve thirty five other students from across Arkansas.”
Between June 10 and June 18 the tour will visit Monticello, the White House, the U.S. Capitol, Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson monuments; the Vietnam Memorial, Arlington cemetery, and other sites in Washington, D.C. This visit will be a combination of education, history, and fun to our nation’s capital.
In addition the pair from MCEC is eligible to compete to represent Arkansas on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour consulting Board. Arkansas’ representative, selected by the tour directors, will attend NRECA’s national meeting and participate in a variety of other cooperative activities throughout the year.
Each of Arkansas’ seventeen electric cooperatives selected representatives for the Youth Tour, primarily through essay contests and speech contests. These winners will join approximately 1,400 youths from thirty eight states in Washington for the National Rural Electric Youth Tour. This is Arkansas’ seventeenth year to participate in the program.
